There’s something about having plans that just makes life a little more exciting. Whether you’re expecting a package, you have an upcoming date night on the calendar, or you’re eagerly awaiting a new pair of dentures, anticipating something good can do wonders for your mood.
If you’re expecting a new pair of dentures soon, you may be wondering how long you’ll have to wait before they’re ready to wear. Here’s a general timeline for when you can expect them to arrive.
The Denture Process Timeline
Unfortunately, getting new dentures isn’t as easy as clicking “add to cart” and receiving them two days later. The entire process takes multiple steps, each of which varies in length. Here are some of the steps you can expect to take on your journey.
- Dental exam: At your initial appointment, your dentist will inspect your jaw and any remaining teeth and determine if you need teeth pulled. They will also determine if you are a good candidate for a partial denture or if you would be better suited with a full set.
- Extraction: If your dentist has decided you need to remove any teeth, this must be done before your dental impressions can be made. You must fully heal from any tooth extractions first, so plan on waiting around six to eight weeks before this next step.
- Impressions: When you are ready for impressions, your dentist will then make a mold of your mouth. This only takes a few minutes and can be done right in your dentist’s office.
- Bite check: Once your impressions are complete your dentist will do what is known as a bite check. This ensures that your dentures will align properly so that you can speak and chew with ease. At this time, you can make any necessary adjustments to your tooth shape and size. You can even choose the color!
- “Try In”: Once your impressions are sent to the lab, you will get a model pair that you can try to ensure that the fit is correct and that you are happy with the overall look and feel. If you need any changes, you may request them at this time, or you can approve the model as is.
- Manufacturing. Now that you’ve given the go-ahead on your new dentures, the manufacturer will custom craft your pair. This can take between three to six weeks.
How Long Will My New Dentures Take?
In total, from the date of your first appointment to the moment your dentist presents you with your new dentures can take upwards of six months. This, of course, will depend on several factors, including the type of dentures and if you will need any teeth pulled prior to placing your order.
In a Hurry?
If you need temporary dentures or you don’t want to wait for a traditional pair of dentures, there is a product known as immediate dentures that can be ready sooner. These prostheses arrive a lot faster, but you must have your back teeth removed six to eight weeks in advance of your appointment.
Implant Dentures
Implant dentures are a more permanent solution to traditional dentures. They attach to your jaw via a screw-like post, just like with dental implants, however they are connected to each other like dentures. They provide a more secure fit than regular dentures and can only be removed by your dentist, but they are easier to clean, more durable, and require less maintenance than traditional dentures.
They do take a bit longer than typical dentures, however, as you must have the screws implanted in your jaw prior to their installation, so you will need to factor in time for surgery and subsequent healing before you can have them attached.
Whether you’re looking for a new pair of regular, immediate, or implant dentures, timelines will vary. Thankfully, you’ll soon have a beautiful new smile to look forward to!
