5 Myths About Cosmetic Dentistry

Sometimes myths can be fun. Hey, maybe cats really do have nine lives! But in other instances, they may seem true, but they can be dangerously or erroneously misleading. Such is the case with these five myths about cosmetic dentistry. If you’ve heard this misinformation before, here’s the truth, and why you shouldn’t let rumors stop you from getting your best smile ever!

Myth #1: It’s Expensive

While some cosmetic dentistry procedures may cost more than others, there are often treatments for a variety of budgets. For example, you may not be able to afford a full set of veneers, however, you may be able to repair a chipped tooth with more affordable dental bonding instead.

Furthermore, some treatments may be partially covered by your dental insurance, so don’t hesitate to check with your dentist’s office for questions about your policy.

Myth #2: It’s Painful

For the most part, cosmetic dentistry procedures aren’t painful. Dental bonding should not cause any discomfort at all, while professional whitening may cause minor temporary sensitivity. For procedures that are more invasive like veneers, your dentist will numb the area to be treated, so you won’t feel a thing during the procedure itself; afterwards, you may experience mild discomfort, but usually this can be alleviated with over-the-counter pain medication.

Myth #3:  It’s Purely Cosmetic

While it’s true that it is called “cosmetic dentistry,” this is often a bit of a misnomer, because it often has oral health benefits, too. Dental bonding and veneers can restore broken teeth, so they function properly, and metal free dental restorations replace older fillings and keep your teeth safe from further damage.

Myth #4: My Teeth Will Look Fake

Gone are the days when cosmetic dentistry meant blindingly white teeth that you could spot a mile away. Today veneers are much more customizable, so you can choose the shade of white that you want and never worry that it looks fake.

Myth #5: The Results are Permanent

Unfortunately, this is false. Most cosmetic dentistry procedures are a commitment. Not only will you still need to care for your teeth and gums following your treatment, but in many cases, you will need to commit to having it redone. Veneers are a lifelong commitment that will need to be redone within about 20 years. Bonding should last about ten years, and although professional whitening is permanent, your teeth can become stained again if you don’t take good care of them.

Remember, sometimes myths can do more harm than good. Don’t let these five untruths about cosmetic dentistry stop you from getting your best smile ever!
